In consideration of the current developments in the context of COVID-19, the congress “Self-care in the face of dementia. Everyday life – dignity – spirituality” cannot take place on 7 and 8 May 2020. The event will be postponed and is now scheduled for 27 and 28 May 2021. The thematic orientation (see abstract below) remains unchanged. infomation on the venue, the programme and registration options will be made available on this page as soon as the necessary organisational preparations have been completed.
The congress will focus on the way people with dementia shape their lives: How do those affected take care of themselves and others? The framework is provided by the actor-centred and everyday life-oriented approach of Cultural Studies Research on Age and Aging. The research and practical field of Spiritual Care also serves as a general framework. Against this background, the presentations at the congress will focus on four different topics:
1. conceptual framings and everyday practices
2. self-representation and self-help
3. the relevance of language, narrative and spirituality
4. the role of the environment
With an ethical-critical intention, the congress aims to identify social obstacles to a more self-determined life with dementia. It also aims to identify characteristics of a culture of care, in which the self-care activities of people with dementia are recognised and supported in a non-custodial way.
